What is an aerobic septic system?
An aerobic system includes a few different tanks, and the lids of these tanks can be seen on your property where the system is located. The three tanks are a trash tank, treatment plant, and pump tank. Waste enters the trash tank and settles into multiple layers. Wastewater is then pushed to the treatment tank, which has an aerator that circulates air bubbles through it. The air is necessary to keep the aerobic bacteria in the system alive. These bacteria are good bacteria and help break down waste faster and more effectively than anaerobic bacteria do. Finally, the water is pumped into the pump tank for a final round of treatment using a disinfectant. Then the water exits the system through sprinklers or through underground piping.
Why is it important to have your aerobic system maintained?
The general maintenance of an aerobic system is to assure that the system is working properly and effectively. Systems that are malfunctioning or that are not operating effectively can lead to sewer back up into the home, health hazards from bacteria, foul odors, as well as other problems.
What is done during the routine maintenance check of an aerobic septic system?
Our technicians perform inspections and test to make sure all parts of the system are working properly. This includes…
1. Making sure that the pump is pumping the proper amount.
2. Testing of the spray heads to make sure they are not clogged up.
3. Preforming a thorough check of the compressor to assure that the system is getting proper aeration.
4. Checking that the scum/sludge layer is not too thick.
5. Testing the PH and Chlorine Residual levels and make any necessary recommendations to the customers as needed.
6. If any part of the system is not working properly or requires repairs, we make these recommendations to the customer as well and provide an estimate for the repairs that are needed.
How do you find out who is maintaining your system and when is the last time it was maintained?
A newly installed aerobic system generally includes a maintenance contract. After the maintenance contract expires, it then becomes the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure that the system is being maintained by a maintenance provider. The State of Texas and Montgomery County require all aerobic systems to have an up-to-date contract with a maintenance provider. As the homeowner, you can find your control panel which is located on the side of the house near the system, or on the system itself. There should be a maintenance provider sticker that is dated from the last inspection. Montgomery County requires all aerobic systems be inspected every 4 months, so you should be able to find the date of the last inspection on the sticker.
What do you do if your system does not have a sticker/tag on the control panel, or if your system has not been inspected in over 4 months?
